PNG dimensions: canvas size and visible artwork explained

Understand transparent padding, calculate artwork size, and check lettering exports before placing and printing a personal card.

A PNG can contain thousands of pixels and still look small in a document. Transparent padding occupies part of its canvas, so resizing the whole image also scales that padding.

Measure canvas and artwork separately before setting placement size. The example below is hypothetical; the personal-card workflow is suggested guidance, not a report of export or print testing.

Measure two rectangles

The canvas is the full rectangular image, measured in pixels. PNG supports transparency, including an optional alpha channel. W3C PNG specification

The artwork bounds are a calculated rectangle around pixels counted as content. Record whether you count every nonzero alpha value or use a threshold excluding faint pixels. This rectangle can contain empty space between letters; its dimensions describe extent, not solid coverage.

Work through a placement example

Suppose a centred design has these hypothetical dimensions:

MeasurementWidthHeight
Full canvas4,500 px5,400 px
Artwork bounds3,000 px3,600 px
Transparent margins on each side750 px900 px

At a 12-inch canvas width, the artwork is 8 inches wide: 12 × 3,000 ÷ 4,500. With proportional scaling and square pixels, canvas height is 14.4 inches and artwork height is 9.6 inches.

Required canvas width = target artwork width × canvas pixel width ÷ artwork pixel width.

To obtain 12-inch-wide artwork while retaining the padding, set the canvas width to 18 inches. Check whether that fits the placement area. Alternatively, crop a working copy if the margins are unnecessary; preserve the original and any padding needed for alignment.

Keep size and resolution connected

Effective pixels per inch = pixel width ÷ placed width in inches. At a 12-inch canvas width, 4,500 ÷ 12 = 375 ppi. The artwork has the same density: 3,000 ÷ 8 = 375.

Enlarging the canvas to 18 inches gives 250 ppi. Padding changes artwork placement size; it does not create extra detail. Check your printer's requirements rather than treating either number as a quality guarantee.

Set the physical size explicitly in the destination document. Recheck pixel dimensions after resizing or exporting; changing a resolution label alone does not add pixels.

Check faint edges and alignment

A faint stray pixel can enlarge bounds measured using nonzero alpha. A stronger threshold can exclude a deliberate soft shadow. Inspect against light and dark backgrounds and record the measurement rule.

Geometric centring also differs from visual balance. Check the actual composition after measuring its margins.

Apply the measurements to a personal lettered card

  1. Check the export. Keep an editable original. If the card background should show around the lettering, export with transparency and inspect the downloaded file for an opaque rectangle or clipped flourishes. Fontilo documents transparent PNG export for its premium versions; this capability has not been tested here. Documented exports
  2. Set the destination size. Insert the PNG into your card document, preserve its proportions and enter the calculated whole-canvas width in physical units. Check artwork size, margins and alignment against the intended card area.
  3. Verify the final output. Reopen the final exported document and check its page size and placement. Review the print dialog's paper size and scaling options. Print a plain-paper proof using the intended settings, then measure the lettering before using card stock.

Check usage rights separately

Export format does not establish permission. Fontilo's terms checked 24 October 2026 restrict Free and Plus outputs to private use. Personal greeting cards are among the permitted Plus examples. Plus does not permit client work or print-on-demand sales.

Business permits professional and educational use without design resale. Reseller permits qualifying design resale, subject to independent-work restrictions. Standalone resale of fonts and graphics is prohibited; applicable third-party font licences take precedence over conflicting provider clauses. Check your actual design and intended use. For free options, assess the restricted free generator or your existing editor. Inkscape is a free vector editor with documented PNG export. Software availability does not clear rights to fonts or imported graphics.

Keep a repeatable placement note

Record canvas pixels, artwork bounds, the alpha rule, intended width and print settings. Recheck after cropping or resizing. Geometry can expose a sizing mismatch; a proof print checks the physical result.
